Antonio Palacios' Pilgrimage to Italy |
|
Between May 28 and June 7, my wife and I took part in a pilgrimage to Italy sponsored by St. John Newman Church of Austin with its pastor, Fr. Kirby Garner, leading the group. In addition, Fr. David-Maria Jaeger, OFM, who resides in Rome, was our principal guide.Rome, Assisi, Orvieto, Florence, Siena, Pisa, Ravenna, and Venice were the schedule stops. The best part of it all was celebrating Mass every day at very holy chapels and having Fr. Jaeger officiate and teach us with his homilies not just the spiritual part, but also the history of the places we visited. As it turns out, in addition to Fr. Garner, there was a Deacon in the group, Deacon Don, all of them assisting in the celebration of the Mass. It was great! On the first evening we had dinner in a restaurant in Tivoli.Tivoli lies just outside of Rome and used to be the summer residence of many a Roman in olden days.We visited sites in Rome in addition to the Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. We went to Florence and Siena. We visited a beautiful Byzantine basilica in Ravenna, St. Vitale, which contains extremely beautiful mosaics in its interior. One of the best places we went to was Assisi where we visited St. Francis’ Basilica and celebrated Mass in the chapel where his remains are held. All in all it was a great spiritual experience which I hope some day to repeat. In Rome we got to see the Pope and visit the Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. But most rewarding of all was to attend Mass celebrated by Father Jaeger, with Fr. Garner and Deacon Don assisting, in a small chapel (The Lithuanian chapel) below the main floor of the Basilica; and practically next to the Tomb of Pope John Paul II. |
